AI: Transforming My Legal Practice and the Future of Law

Since my childhood, I have been fascinated by computers and technology. I created my first website when I was 13 years old, which became so popular that I was generating a steady income. I loved seeing my designs, knowing that hundreds of people would visit my website. This inherent passion for technology would later shape my approach to legal practice in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

Now, as a practicing lawyer in Windsor, Ontario, I’ve witnessed firsthand how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing our profession. The legal field, long characterized by its reliance on precedent, meticulous research, and complex documentation, is undergoing a profound transformation thanks to AI technologies that are reshaping how we work and serve our clients.  While many other lawyers remain wedded to traditional methods – employing expensive human assistants, maintaining paper-heavy offices, and relying on outdated systems – I’ve embraced a different path. While other firms pass on the costs of inefficient processes and expensive support staff to their clients, my technology-forward practice delivers quality work at lower costs. Indeed, what’s most remarkable is the competitive advantage my approach provides.

The impact of AI on document preparation and review has been nothing short of revolutionary for my practice. Traditional methods demanded countless hours preparing, for example, wills, real estate closing documents, contracts, and domestic agreements. Now, with natural language processing algorithms and automation scripts, I can generate accurate documents, identify potential issues, and ensure all legal requirements are met with greater speed and precision. My technical background allows me to go beyond just using off-the-shelf legal tech, because I can create custom Python scripts to automate routine processes specific to all aspects of practice. For example, I’ve automated Google Sheets (secured by multi-level 2FA) to handle accounting, tracking and reporting, eliminating the need for a bookkeeper.

Of course, I recognize the challenges and ethical considerations that come with AI adoption. Concerns about algorithmic bias, data privacy, and automated decision-making require careful attention. As legal professionals, we must ensure AI tools uphold fairness, transparency, and accountability. I am thus always aware of the requirements of the Law Society of Ontario with respect to the use of technology. As such, I am similarly highly knowledgeable of and concerned with cybersecurity. For example, my email systems are secured by multiple methods of two-factor authentication – not through SMS, which is unreliable.

Despite all this technology, my role as a lawyer remains essential. Technology excels at processing information and executing routine tasks, but it cannot replace the human judgment needed to guide important legal decisions. I provide the critical thinking, strategic guidance, and emotional intelligence that AI cannot replicate. The technology simply allows me to deliver these irreplaceable human services more efficiently and affordably.

As I look to the future, I’m convinced that AI will continue to reshape our profession in profound ways. By embracing these technologies and finding the right balance between automation and human expertise, I can offer more innovative, affordable, and accessible legal services. In today’s digital age, staying at the forefront of technological advancement isn’t just about maintaining competitiveness—it’s about fulfilling our fundamental responsibility to serve our clients with the most effective tools at our disposal.
